What is Lepicol?
With today's busy lives and irregular eating patterns, many of us find it difficult to keep our bowels healthy. Lepicol, with its three-in-one combination of gentle fibres, probiotic cultures and natural prebiotics, can make this task far easier. The health benefits of fibre are well known, and the current European recommendation for the daily intake of fibre is 25g - something that many of us lack with the modern diet. Therefore, providing high quality fibre to supplement the diet will bring many digestive advantages.
The main fibre source within Lepicol products is Psyllium husks (Plantago ovata forsk). Psyllium is a great fibre as it is able to normalise stool size by being water retentive and, at the same time, forms a soft gel which eases the stool along the lower digestive tract ready for evacuation. Psyllium has the advantage of being much gentler than some common fibres (such as wheat or bran) in supplements that can be irritating to a sensitive bowel.
Lepicol contains five probiotic strains which provide the gastrointestinal tract with beneficial microorganisms to balance the gut microflora. Your digestive tract is home to trillions of gut bacteria that aid in digestion, help prevent a pathogenic bacteria over-growth as well as having an impact on your immune system. Keeping a balanced gut microflora helps to ensure that the environment in your digestive tract is stable and goes a long way to aid in your health well-being. Probiotic strains:
Lactobacillus rhamnosus PXN 54
Bifidobacterium bifidum PXN 23
Lactobacillus acidophilus PXN 35
Lactobacillus plantarum PXN 47
Lactobacillus bulgaricus PXN 39
Probiotic strength: Minimum of 120 million CFU/g (1.2 x 108 CFU/g), equivalent to 600 million CFU/5g dose (6.0 x 108 CFU/5g).
Inulin is a prebiotic fibre that is sourced from chicory root. Inulin is not broken down by the body - it is fermented by the beneficial bacteria in the gut to help the growth of the beneficial microorganisms. This in turn, aids in a fruitful balance of the gut microflora.
Many factors can influence the breakdown of food in your body, including stress and ill health. Supplementing your diet with digestive enzymes can give your body that extra bit of help needed to digest your food more efficiently.
The best way to take Lepicol is to mix it with water or fruit juice and follow this up with the extra liquid that is required (250ml for every 5g/heaped teaspoon of powder). However, it is accepted that not everyone will find Lepicol easy to take. The following suggestions may help in providing some suitable alternatives.
The Lepicol powder could be mixed into a shake quite easily. However as the psyllium husk fibre in Lepicol are not soluble but water retentive, absorbing about 20 times its weight in water, it does not actually dissolve when mixed with liquid but slowly creates a 'gel' like substance. This soft gel helps ease the stool along the lower digestive tract and encourages natural peristalsis (contraction of the smooth muscles to propel contents through the digestive tract). With this in mind Lepicol will make a thicker shake than normal so some experimentation will be required regarding the levels of Lepicol and liquid included. It may be preferable to try with smaller amounts of Lepicol initially to try and find a level that is suitable.
The Lepicol powder could be mixed with the liquid in cereals quite easily. Due to the absorptive nature of the psyllium husk it may be necessary to use more milk/water than usual. It is particularly important that the Lepicol powder is mixed into the cereal and liquid well if it is to be served to children. Porridge is a good option, simply add Lepicol to the porridge after it has been cooked and removed from the hob (the probiotics could be damaged at high temperatures).
The Lepicol powder could also be mixed well with yoghurt and fruit. Due to the absorptive nature of the psyllium husk fibre you may need to add some extra milk to the yoghurt to prevent the consistency becoming too thick.
Please ensure that the required levels of liquid are met (200-250ml for every 5g/heaped teaspoon) either by inclding more liquid than normal, or by drinking more water before or after consumption.
We recommend you consume the above suggestions within 10 minutes of preparation.
